Travelers of Indian Railways always wonder what is the basis of the fine or penalty charged by the Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE). Is the TTE fine is correct or he tries to over charge and keeps the remaining money? It’s impossible to argue with him if you don’t know the rules by the Indian Railways. So here is the list of Fine or Penalty charges calculation rules by the IR.
Scenarios mentioned here for Indian Railways Fine / Penalty Charges Calculation rules are which I can think of right now and people asks usually. If you go through a particular situation share it in the comments section and I will update the article with that.
Scenario 1: Person travelling with no ticket
In this case TTE is authorized to charge the cost of ticket from the boarding station depends on the class of travel + 250/500 rupees. If you can’t convince him about the boarding station he can charge the ticket value from the starting point of the journey.
Scenario 2: Person travels in Second sleeper with General ticket
In this scenario Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) will charge the difference between the second sleeper and the General class + 250/500 rupees. Remember that Sleeper class or above fare is charged for a minimum of 200 kms so even if you travel less than that you should pay the money for that distance.
Scenario 3: Person travelling with a waiting list ticket
This considered as a no ticket travel. See the scenario 1 for the penalty charges.
Scenario 4: Caught with no platform ticket
The checker at the gate or any authorized Railway person can charge you the total fare of last arrival train in the station.
